Earlier today I received this message in my in-box; basically stating does your efforts reflect a photo of yourself. It started me to think about a lot of things. I remember reading a book about Colonel Sanders knocking upon one thousand doors before selling his recipe to create KFC before he was ever recognized. I also recalled Tony Robbins teachings that Massive Action equals Massive results.

Although most people see themselves as successful, many people think of themselves as failures. Let me explain, as people go through their goal setting process they don’t actually achieve their intended results. When this happens time after time they think being successful is beyond their reach.

Another thing that comes into play is when people are not working with the correct description of success. People associate achieving success with goal achievement, however the two are not the same.
An essential point is that you don’t have to achieve your main goal to be successful. As out lined by best-selling author Robert G Allen”

When people don’t realize this state of mind they become frustrated and they often give up on their goal but fail to realize any progress they’ve made towards achieving their intended goal.

As you can see defining a “goal” is not the main issue and that’s why so many people should simply focus on striving towards basic results, guiding them towards their goal. Obviously you need to keep your goal within your reach but it’s also necessary to release a sense of disinterest to the outcome. Focus each and every day on what you can do to improve yourself. This will mentally prepare you for the tasks ahead and you will achieve the steps needed to realize your goal. I can understand this seems very confusing to have a sense of indifference about your goal but remember:

I have seen people buy a course or attend a seminar hoping it will change their lives. They even start implementing some of knowledge received in that course or the seminar but for many, change simply doesn’t happen fast enough. It’s not instantaneous, typically found in our society’s “fast food mental mindset” and so people become discouraged and give up.

Many people don’t realize they want to and in some cases need to achieve a particular goal. That goal by it itself, is not important. The goal is immaterial however the process of growth brings much success.
It’s all about what you experience, learn and strive towards to reach that goal. So as you are experiencing and developing into a better person this transforms you into a success, whether you reach your goal or not. In other words, you are developing into a higher being transforming you to the same level sought after by your goal.

Typically people don’t often allow themselves to feel the pleasure of the progress they have made. They don’t express their appreciation regarding the progress they accomplished. They are frequently too busy focusing on their lack of progress. They compare themselves to others looking for acceptance. They put themselves down and in doing so drift further away in the opposite direction of what they intended to accomplish. They literally push their goal away and continue to do so or they simply abandon the goal altogether.
So the secret to your success with goals is to relax into the process of small daily achievements of a lesser goal. Keep your main goal in sight but plunge into simple small steps you need to maintain a day-by-day forward momentum towards your goal.

There will be times when you won’t see the positive effects of your daily actions and it would appear achieving success may be far-fetched. During those times, take comfort in the knowledge that you are consistently taking action and as stated by David Allen, author of “Ready for Anything, 52 Productivity Principles for Work and Life” said: “Small things, done consistently, create major impact.”

Does setting your personal goal work?  Many people want things, situations or accomplishments, but they are disappointed when they don’t get them. Why is that? Instead of a goal, why not ask yourself the purpose of the goal. What enjoyment will it bring to you and the people effect by your chosen goal?  Everyone has desires and picks a goal, but just naming your desires isn’t effective goal setting. All good goals have some or all of the following:

1. They are specific. “I want to make a lot of money” is too general. “I want make $5000 so I can take my family on that 7day cruise to feed the stingrays,” is better.

2. They are measurable. How much will the cruise cost? When will I book the cruise? How much money do I have now? How much better will my relationship be with my family?

3. They are in writing. There is power in writing down your goals. It gives a clear direction and influences your subconscious mind, especially if you write your goals daily. However write down what you can realistically do in one day, a week and a month…….

4. They are realistic. Think about it for a moment, why do you want it and can you see yourself achieving that goal. For example, is it possible you to become an astronaut, if you’re already 55, so why not try to becoming a pilot instead. Unrealistic goals set you up for failure.

5. They have deadlines. i.e. You’ll have a zero balance on your credit card by when? Setting dates really helps your progress.

6. They become plans. Make goals into specific steps, daily plans of action makes it much more likely to succeed. It isn’t overwhelming to take small regular steps one at a time.

7. They are motivated. Having the “why” in your goal is the reason that brings you life. It will keep you focus and will continue to motivate yourself. Write a daily affirmation saying I am happily enjoying the goal. Reward yourself, by getting all the smaller pieces of your goal when you make progress.

8. They consider personal factors. Can you really get what you want if you feel like you don’t deserve it? Maybe, but a challenge will stimulate personal growth causing you to expand yourself.  Remember, a thin tall tree trimmed regularly grows into a strong tree that can withstand any wind.

9. They are followed by action. Now this is the most important step…. All the planning and learning will not mean anything without taking daily measureable actions each day. Whether you start fast or slow each day you should have taken steps closer to you goal. There will be days when little if any action was taken, but don’t punish yourself, simply realize time has passed, live in the present monument and continue in taking action.

10. They are not written in stone. Goals naturally evolve because they challenge you causing personal growth within yourself. This in turn makes you reevaluate the goal to determine the best outcome for your chosen goal.  i.e. Why would you become a doctor once you learned that you liked doing lab work better?

However make sure you make this clear distinction in your mind.  An excuse and a change of course are not the same thing. Be honest to yourself; know the difference because it develops a certain level of self-awareness. Develop that inner confidence, helps you apply the keys to personal goal setting and you’ll get become what you indented to be.
